What is Comprehensive Car Insurance?

by COUNTRY Financial

While comprehensive car insurance sounds like it should protect your car in all situations, car insurance isn’t quite that simple.

So, what is comprehensive insurance? It covers damage from events other than hitting another vehicle or object. Things like a ladder falling from a truck and hitting your bumper, or an oak tree dropping a massive limb on your hood. It also covers replacement costs if your car is stolen.

In other words, comprehensive coverage is there to cover situations you might not have expected.

Do I need comprehensive coverage?

One of the best ways to know if you need comprehensive auto insurance is to ask yourself what would happen if your car was stolen. Could you afford to replace it without making big sacrifices? If your car isn’t worth very much and you have money saved up, you might not need comprehensive coverage. But if replacing your car would cause financial stress, comprehensive coverage could help tremendously.

Comprehensive coverage isn’t mandatory. Lenders might require it if your car is being financed or leased, but if your car is paid off, you can choose to decline this coverage.

What does comprehensive auto insurance cover?

Comprehensive auto insurance protects against:

  • Theft
  • Natural disasters and storm damage
  • Windshield damage
    • Unlike many other insurers, we offer a full glass coverage option with a $0 deductible as an add-on to comprehensive car insurance.
  • Fire or explosion
  • Vandalism
  • Falling objects
  • Contact with an animal

Comprehensive insurance does not protect against:

  • Damage to your car if you’re in an accident with another vehicle or object (collision coverage)
  • Damage to other cars (collision coverage)
  • Medical bills (bodily injury liability coverage)

What's the risk of not having comprehensive car insurance?

Without comprehensive car insurance, you’re taking on the financial risk of repairing or replacing your car if something unexpected happens. Keep in mind that if you decline comprehensive insurance, you can't get collision insurance. Collision is the type of insurance you need if you get into an accident with another vehicle.

Is there a limit to what comprehensive insurance will cover?

First, it's important to know that comprehensive insurance will not cover damage from collisions. You'll need collision coverage for that, as collision coverage and comprehensive coverage are two separate products.

Back to comprehensive insurance limits; it depends on a few things. First, you’ll need to choose a deductible (usually $500–$1,500) which is the amount you cover if you file a claim. Once you file a claim and pay your deductible, insurance will usually reimburse you for the actual cash value of your car — which accounts for depreciation due to age and wear and tear on the vehicle.

Final thoughts

While most car insurance coverage pays costs related to accidents, comprehensive coverage protects you from damage caused by the unexpected. There are lots of things that could damage your car other than a driving accident, and without comprehensive coverage, you could be on the hook to repair your car out-of-pocket.

Frequently asked questions

Comprehensive coverage protects against damage caused by events other than hitting another vehicle or object. Collision insurance, as its name implies, does cover collisions; it applies to almost any type of collision, including those where you’re the only driver (if you hit a tree or back into a mailbox, for example).

Full coverage car insurance is a policy that includes comprehensive, collision and liability coverage. It's designed to protect you and your car from as many events as possible.

There are several factors, including:

  • What car you drive
  • Where you live
  • Your driving history
  • Coverage limits
  • Your deductible

Some might say to purchase them both, as comprehensive coverage and liability coverage work well together. Comprehensive insurance covers your car, while liability insurance protects you from paying out-of-pocket for damage to another person or their property.

That said, they are separate insurance products, so buying them both will cost more. Your insurance agent can help you decide what's best for your budget.
